Next door to me lived my best friend
And his dad Monte Hall
Monte taught us every sport
From Washers to Basketball
Important things like, “Pokes no rebounds”
When someone lets off gas
And, “Any fish caught by a rock
Is always a Rock Bass”
I remember he stayed up all night
Putting spokes in my bike wheel
Mumbledly Peg, Hot Hickory
Even a car show at the Kiel
He liked to tell us funny jokes
Some were really bad
Either way when he told a joke
He got the biggest laugh
Unaware he was my mentor
I didn’t think of him as wise
Never condescending
He was just one of the guys
He put to silence the bad dudes
Who threatened to mess him up
Monte calmly looked at them
And said, “You ain’t big enough”
Somewhere around the year
nineteen seventy seven
Monte heard the Gospel
“Even he” Could go to Heaven
Still he is my hero
But in a different sort of way
Now he shows me how to live
For Jesus every day.
Thanks Monte
